11 Fun Super Bowl Traditions
Every year as January comes to a close we are both saddened and exhilarated by one thing. The end of the Football Season. Sad because now we will not do with our Sundays? But, exhilarated because the end of the regular season means only one thing: The Super Bowl! And, just like any five-year-old anticipates the coming of Christmas, so too, will millions of adults wait anxiously for the best Sunday of all Sundays. Many football fans have personal traditions and superstitions. We have put together 11 Super Bowl Traditions to enjoy as we patiently await for Sunday, February 5, 2017, at 6:30 pm. For that is the time two teams will battle to become Super Bowl LI Champion!
1. A Super Sunday
Since its inception, the Super Bowl, is always played on a Sunday in January. This changed for good starting in 2003. From that point, the Super Bowl showdown has always taken place on the first Sunday in February.
2. Brush Up On Your Roman Numerals
In its fifty-one year history, the Super Bowl game has always been designated by a roman numeral. This has held true, except for Super Bowl 50. That year they ditched the Roman Numeral L in place of the more modern “50.” But rest assured, they are returning to tradition for Super Bowl LI.
3. Pre-Game Show
While some folks spend their time before the Big Show scooping guac, chomping on wings, or guzzling beer, there are just as many glued to the tube for the pre-game festivities. It is a chance to catch all the commentary and predictions and pre-game performances, ending with the singing of the National Anthem.
4. The Coin Toss
This is the moment everyone has been waiting for. The final exciting seconds before the game gets underway. It is the time the teams decide who will kick and who will receive. Here We Go!
5. The Half-Time Show
Whether it is a shark stealing the show or a wardrobe malfunction, everyone has a favorite Super Bowl Half-Time performance. Pretty much since the beginning the half-time show centered around a theme performed by a marching band. However in the late eighties and early nineties brought a surge in performances by popular music groups. This tradition grew, and modern half-time shows are nothing short of an extravaganza. Lady Gaga and Super Bowl LI are sure to continue with an over-the-top performance.
6. Living Room Tailgating
One thing is true on Game Day. No matter how you celebrate, you need good food and drinks. There are estimates that on Super Bowl Sunday alone 1.3 billion chicken wings are consumed! Not in the mood to cook? Have a potluck, or better yet, have your party catered.
7. A Presidential Tradition
For many administrations, the POTUS was asked to predict the winner of the big game. The presidential tradition continues with an official invite for the winning team to visit The White House. Who will President Trump pick? It will be YUGE, we promise you that.
8. Pass the Gatorade Please
What would a Super Bowl Victory be without dousing the winning coach in Gatorade? The origins of the first shower are highly contested. While some claim the honor goes to the Chicago Bears who schemed to get coach Mike Ditka wet after a regular-season win over the Minnesota Vikings in 1984. However, some say it started when the NY Giants won over the Washington Redskins on October 20, 1985.
9. Going to Disney World
“I’m going to Disney World!” and “I’m going to Disneyland!” are phrased exclaimed after the Super Bowl since Phil Simms first uttered the phrases in 1987. He kicked off the tradition after the New York Giants beat the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXI (that’s Super Bowl 21 for those needing a Roman numeral lesson).
10. Place Your Bets!
The estimated claim that up to $99 million in LEGAL bets are set every year for the Super Bowl. Revelers can bet on just about every aspect of the Big Game. From predicting winners to individual plays, folks can place their money down.
11. The Million Dollar Commercial Spots
Pretty much every American, whether or not you like football, will tune in on Super Bowl Sunday for the biggest oxymoron of television history: to watch commercials. This poses the biggest conundrum of all. When are you supposed to run to the bathroom or get more wings or grab another beer?
