How to Create the Ultimate Grilled Cheese
As if cheese, in general, could become any more enjoyable, there’s always room to take it up a notch. We’re talking Grilled Cheese sandwiches to be exact. Not to be confused with your standard hot and melty grilled cheese sandwich. Nope. We can do better than that. Of course, not just any type of cheese will do. After all, we have high expectations for all of our meals, not just BBQ. Below are a few tips on how to create the ultimate grilled cheese using the best ingredients.
The Cheese
The components of a grilled cheese are simple: you need butter, bread, and cheese. But, while the ingredients may be short and sweet, the flavor can’t be beaten. Needless to say, the most important ingredient is the cheese! It pays to use a medium-soft to medium-hard cheese to achieve the best-quality melt. Although, the type of cheese you choose is entirely up to you. For the most part, American cheese is the most popular choice for grilled cheeses, along with sharp cheddar. Meanwhile, pepper jack, Monterey, gouda, and gruyere can spice things up a bit and add a bolder flavor to your sandwich. And, you’ll still get the same gooey melty texture. All in all, whatever you decide, never skimp on the cheese!
The Bread
Selecting the perfect bread is also important when it comes to creating the ultimate grilled cheese sandwich. First and foremost, choose a bread that has no added sugar, as this will cause the bread to brown faster. In turn, your bread will likely burn before the cheese has a chance to melt all the way. That’s a no go. So, try out rye, sourdough, Ezekiel, or whole-grain wheat bread instead as they all typically have a very low sugar content.
On the other hand, as opposed to a slice of soft white bread, choosing a thicker, sturdier bread will help hold your sandwich together. Extra cheese, please! Specifically, thick breads like challah and brioche are particular favorites that will hold its shape. They also come with a pronounced buttery flavor. Overall, with the right slice of bread as your base, you’ll have the best shot at a super-crisp, cheesy crust with no burns.
The Butter
When it comes to your butter selection, opt for a regular, unsalted and unsweetened brand. Given the milk solids of the regular butter, you are more likely to get a much tastier sandwich. Also, we recommend that you butter the bread instead of the pan. Many people place the butter inside the pan to melt before adding the sandwich. However, if you butter the sides of your bread, you get a more evenly-toasted sandwich.
Why Not Add BBQ?
If you want to expand upon the classic grilled cheese, there are so many options to choose from, including BBQ! For instance, make a Wisconsin Grilled Cheese sandwich using cheddar, sliced grilled bratwurst, sauerkraut, and mustard on a Semmel roll. Or, create a BBQ Pulled Pork Grilled Cheese with cheddar cheese, tangy BBQ sauce, pulled pork, and coleslaw. And, while BBQ Grilled Cheese does make for a slightly messier sandwich, your taste buds will thank you.
